On Disillusionment of
American Dream by Analyzing the
Characters’ Spiritual Journey in Of Mice and Men
Abstract: Facing the social crisis and spiritual crisis of the twentieth century, the characters in many plays written by John Steinbeck can do nothing but weave the endless dreams to seek their self-salvation in that society. Although those measures are not the fundamental solution to their problems, they are the unique outlet to save themselves. All these indicate that in the then American society, the common masses had no ability or possibility to change the reality and all their seeming measures for salvation were useless. The paper, through analyzing the spiritual journey of the characters in Steinbeck’s plays of Of Mice and Men and their broken American Dream, reveals the inevitability of the broken American Dream in the background of the social crisis and the spiritual crisis in the 20th century. Therefore, the paper concludes that the disillusion of American Dream is not merely the sadness of the ordinary Americans but also the tragedy of the whole American society.

Introduction
John Steinbeck (1902-1968), as a Nobel Prize laureate for literature, is generally considered as one of the most important American writers in the 20th century. Steinbeck produced nearly twenty novels during his lifetime. Although California, his home state, is the basic setting for most of his books, Steinbeck’s topics in writing range from culture, politics, war, and science to society, and so on. These works win the popularity from wide audiences and attract the enthusiasm of quite a few critics.
